Have you ever wondered what it's like inside a luthier's workshop? Well, in 2 weeks time, you'll have the chance to meet me & come inside my workshop, to see where my acoustic guitars are created. You'll also have the chance to play one of my guitars & see what they're all about!

As well as studio tours and chatting to all of the participating artists, you can expect live demonstrations, art for sale/ commissions.

And of course there will be refreshments.

Apart from luthiery, one of my other passions/inte

Apart from luthiery, one of my other passions/interests/hobbies is gardening and growing my own organic food on my allotment. I've been at this caper for about 5 years now & I'm slowly getting better and better results. Scotland is a fairly challenging zone to grow in, not getting a tremendous amount of heat & sunlight compared to warmer climates, but we do get a lot of rain - which is good! I mostly employ the @charles_dowding/@stephaniehafferty "no dig" methodology, whereby you don't dig the soil & disturb the structure & soil life below, but rather, add compost to the surface. The plant roots still go into the soil below and are fed by the compost above.

This was a mini harvest from yesterday which includes leek, pink potatoes, onions, orange & red beetroots, broccoli, pickling cucumbers and a few raspberries & blackberries.

I decided to make the bridge for this upcoming commission from "Ebogany". (For tone, obviously) 😂

Jokes aside, part of my bridge making process requires a rectangular shape to start with, but this Ebony bridge blank was an odd shape, but perfectly fine for a bridge. So I glued some mahogany wings onto it so I could process it as I normally do and they will be cut off later.

My mentor & tutor Bill Kelday taught me that the wood that we use for instrument making is very precious & shouldn't be wasted. Even when it seems like it's the wrong shape or size to use, there's always a way around things and you can usually make things work, rather than discard a perfectly good piece of Ebony.

I've tried many different methods for locating the fingerboard on the neck before gluing it in place, but have finally settled on 4 standard nails. I just happened to have a box of them lying around the workshop once & they all measure exactly 1.4mm in diameter, so that's perfect.

So if you look back at some of my most recent posts, I inlayed, what could be described as an end graft, but into the point of the Florentine cutaway. So it became like a 3D end graft, wrapped around a corner. I also mentioned that I might make a post about how I made it, if I could find enough footage. I found a bit here 🤓

I wanted to come up with a way to make this in one piece, separate to the guitar and then inlay it, rather than faffing about with separate pieces of bindings & purflings that I'd have to mitre together on the guitar.

So I figured out that I needed to make a long block of ebony, that had to have black/pear purfling along its back, top & bottom. This would match the actual end graft & the guitars' binding itself. But this involves making some very long mitres on the sheets of purflings, which is quite tricky. Especially because when you make a long mitre joint that you will later expose the insides of, you don't always know how it looks on the inside! So you have to do it very accurately along its length.

I made a small 45 degree guide block with an end stop from birch ply, which allowed me to repeatedly slice a "long" 45 degree cut into the purflings with great accuracy. I had to cut this 45 degree angle into the purflings that were glued to the block as well, as you see in the video.

Then it was just an "easy" glue up of all your hard work in the exact right position that you wanted it to be in 😅 and then inlay that into the guitar!

This is the matching ends graft for the upcoming Mahogany/Adirondack MDC. My client is a huge fan of Flamed Maple, coming from a mandolin background, so we've incorporated a few pieces in this build. It's in the rosette & will also feature somewhere else, yet to be seen 🧐

I played around with the width & length of the Flamed Maple inlay, settling on this size. Turned out rather Art Deco according to my client and I tend to agree.

I was toying with the idea of making the Florentine cutaway point (from my last post) the same as this, but decided not to in the end.

So it was a new concept, whereby I essentially inlayed (almost) the same design as the end graft, but into the point of the Florentine cutaway. So it's kind of like a 3D end graft, wrapped around a corner.

I came up with a pretty nifty way to make this block that I inlayed, purfled & mitred too. I might share another post about how I did that if I've got enough photos.

It's Ebony & Steamed Pearwood for all of the wood nerds out there.
